In our last blog, we explored tooth sensitivity and started to address what can cause sensitive teeth.
Below, Dr. Gradeless discusses some common causes of tooth sensitivity.
Uneven Bite – When your teeth are hitting each other too soon or too hard because they have shifted, this can lead to sensitivity. Common causes of an uneven bite may be due to a tooth being extracted and the surrounding teeth beginning to shift into the empty space. Other things, such as loss of bone structure or thumb sucking as a kid, can also cause teeth to shift and create an uneven bite.
Trauma – Sensitivity can occur when a tooth has been damaged, such as a cracked, chipped or bruised tooth. Your dentist will be able to offer treatments to help restore the tooth back to a healthy state.
Decay/Infections – When the tooth has decay or an infection, this can make it sensitive to different kinds of foods and drinks. Decays and infections need to be treated immediately to keep the tooth healthy and avoid further dental health issues.
Dentinal Sensitive – Dentin, which is the inner layer of a tooth, can become exposed for a number of issues and when this occurs it results in a sensitive tooth.
In our next blog, we will discuss the various reasons that dentin may become exposed.
