Improve Your Oral Health With These Foods Pt. 2

Young People With Hands Up in Car

Following our last post, we would like to look at a few more foods that can benefit the health of your teeth.

The worst kinds of food for your teeth are foods and drinks that are sugary, acidic or sticky. Foods or drinks with these characteristics contribute to the advancement of plaque, which can lead to issues such as decay, cavities and gum disease.

So what are some other foods that are good for your mouth?

Cheese

Cheese is low in both sugar and acid and is a good source of calcium. Cheese also contains a protein called casein. Casein is found in milk and is useful in strengthening the surface of your teeth.

Sugar-Free Gum

The ADA has found that chewing sugarless gum following meals may help aid against cavities. Sugarfree gum, such as B-Fresh and Trident contain an artificial sweetener known as xylitol. Xylitol, unlike other artificial sweeteners, helps fight against decay and gum disease. We recommend viewing the gum brands with ADA’s seal of acceptance to know which kind you should buy.

Pears

A pear is a great option because, unlike other kinds of fruits, it has a neutralizing effect on acids.

Yogurt

Yogurt also contains casein, like cheese does, as well as calcium and phosphates that can help remineralize your teeth. Yogurt is another snack that can help keep your mouth healthy.

As we mentioned in our last blog, these foods are not meant to be a substitute for brushing and flossing your teeth twice per day. These foods can help in keeping your teeth healthy, but will not take over proper dental hygiene.

If you are due for a teeth cleaning or have any concerns about the health of your mouth, be sure to schedule an appointment with Dr. Gradeless in Fishers, IN.
